CULTURAL TREASURE TRUNK PROGRAM

The Cultural Treasure Trunk project was created to be taken into the classrooms of whether academic schools or community settings, to enrich the students or learners, through interactive cultural teachings of Asia Pacific countries. APCC Cultural Trunks are available upon requests from the schools, teachers, or program coordinators of any education setting. APCC will send a trunk of any requested Asia Pacific country with a cultural interpreter of that country to present and teach the country's history, key elements of its culture, crafts, arts, dance, music, and food. Each presentation is at least for one full hour and no more than three hours at a time! A three hour presentation would include a hands-on activity or more to instill more interest of the participants. The Cultural Treasure Trunk is educational and aimed at enhancing the school's curriculum and is designed to increase knowledge and understanding of Asia Pacific cultures. The culturally-themed, portable trunks may be accompanied by cultural interpreters who can share personal experiences in three areas: live, work and play/create. This project has been field tested and is now in demand from the schools and library systems throughout the State.

APCC is taking the lead in partnering with the Washington State History Museum, Tacoma Arts Museum, Wing Luke Museum, local and statewide Educators, Librarians, Community Centers Directors, and Asia Pacific communities to broaden greater public awareness of the cultural diversity Asia Pacific communities have brought to our shores through the immigration process.

The APCC Cultural Treasure Trunk Project goals are but not limited to:

• To assist first generation Americans of Asia Pacific heritage in their process of assimilation.
• To broaden the public's understanding and appreciation of traditional and contemporary Asia Pacific cultures.
• To assist teachers and librarians in educating temeselves and their students about Asia Pacific traditions and culture.
• To facilitate inquiry into the impact contemporary immigration has on traditions and culture.
