 APCC Program and EventDescriptions

Asia Pacific Cultural Program

The Asia Pacific Cultural Program provides interactive culture and arts activities that engage the community, promote a greater understanding of the Asian and Pacific Islander culture, and help people embrace the rich diversity in our community.  We offer a wide range of activities including hands-on workshops, classes, and educational booths, as well as large-scale cultural exhibitions and festivals. Many of these events are held at the APCC building, but schools, museums, private companies, agencies, and other groups also request for us to come out to present or host an event. Participants learn from and interact with our Cultural Interpreters who are from these countries and speak the language and are highly experienced and knowledgeable, providing authentic teachings that are true and respectful of the culture and people.

Annual Asia Pacific New Year Celebration

We celebrate the lunar new year with APCC’s largest annual event, the Asia Pacific New Year Celebration.  This community-based arts and culture exhibition features a different host country or culture each year.  It is a free, family-friendly event that showcases the Asian and Pacific Islander heritage.  The day is filled with more than 20 exciting performing groups on the Main Stage, martial arts and other demos on the Demonstration Stage, culture and arts booths and displays, authentic cuisine, and a variety of vendors and resource booths.  This is APCC’s signature event held at the Tacoma Dome for over 20 years, bringing thousands of people together to be immersed in the beautifully rich and diverse culture of the Asia Pacific.

Annual Polynesian Luau

APCC’s Annual Polynesian Luau is held at the beautiful park grounds next to the APCC building at 4851 South Tacoma Way, Tacoma.  This event always features a delicious feast, lively music, and traditional dances from the Pacific Islands.  You can always feel the warmth and spirit of the islands when you come to our Polynesian Luau.

Asia Pacific Youth Summer Learning Program

The Asia Pacific Youth Summer Learning Program helps Asian and Pacific Islander high school students by teaching job-readiness and life skills, providing career exploration, engaging them in volunteer community service activities, and helping them to gain work experience through summer jobs.  Students gain valuable knowledge and experience, and they can even earn high school credit.

Samoa Cultural Day

Thousands of people gather each July for the exciting Annual Samoa Cultural Day.  This day is joyous and festive celebration of the Samoan people and the rich Polynesian heritage.   In Washington State, the Samoan population make up the largest Pacific Islander group, and APCC is proud to host this free event for people to share in and experience their unique traditions and customs.  After a parade and the traditional Ava Welcome Ceremony, participants get to enjoy a variety of activities including village singing and chants, dances, cultural displays, arts and crafts, games, and authentic cuisine.

Chuseok Korean Festival

Chuseok means “autumn eve” in Korean, and is the name of the traditional harvest festival celebrated worldwide. APCC’s Chuseok Korean Festival includes a fun-filled day of Samulnori drum dances, paper lotus flower making, Korean musical instruments, delicious food, and lots of fanfare!
