Asia Pacific Cultural Center invites community members to experience the lively tradition of Bongsan Talchum, a Korean mask dance drama celebrated for its expressive movement, humor, and vibrant storytelling. Originating in Korea’s Hwanghae Province, Bongsan Talchum represents the distinctive Haeseo style of mask dance, blending choreography, dialogue, music, and symbolic masks into an engaging folk performance passed down through generations.
Traditionally performed during festive gatherings such as the Dano holiday, the dance explores themes of spiritual cleansing, joyful celebration, and playful satire. Through colorful characters—including monks, noblemen, shamans, and commoners—the performance humorously critiques social hierarchy and human behavior while inviting audiences to laugh, reflect, and connect with Korean cultural heritage.
Participants in this hands-on workshop will learn the foundations of Bongsan Talchum, including character movement, expressive gestures, and the meaning behind traditional masks and costumes. The program runs March 15 through May 15, 2026, with one to two weekly sessions lasting two hours. Open to all ages and experience levels, the workshop provides a welcoming space to explore Korean performing arts while building confidence and stage presence. The experience concludes with a special final performance for invited guests and community supporters.
Meet the Instructor
The workshop is led by Kang Woojong, a dedicated practitioner and actor recognized as a holder of Korea’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage in Bongsan Talchum. He began his formal training in 2005 and has since appeared in more than 300 invited performances, including international stages in Seattle, Portland, and Taiwan. With over 15 years of teaching experience in acting and performance training, Kang brings both deep cultural knowledge and engaging instruction to students exploring this traditional art form.
